Overview: Afghanistan's official title is the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. It is the world's 41st largest country and is land-locked and mountainous with plains in the north and south-west of the country. Large areas of the country are dry and have limited fresh water supplies. The country suffers frequent earthquakes. Natural resources include copper iron ore, zinc, precious & semi-precious stones and significant gas and oil reserves. These resources are largely un-tapped due to the country's invasion by the Soviet Union in 1979 and subsequent civil war. In 2001 an invasion force, led by the United States of America, over-threw the Taliban rulers. Since then a UN-created military force has been helping the Afghan government to re-build the country and establish and maintain law.
The government of Afghanistan is committed to economic reform and to improving access to basic services, infrastructure, housing and education. Money can now be transferred in and out of the country using official banking channels and international procedures. As a result the economy is going through a major change and many of the country's people still suffer from insufficient food, housing and other essentials.
Afghanistan is overwhelmingly Muslem (89.2% Sunni & 8.9% Shi'a). It is divided into 34 provinces, each of which has its' own capital. Each province is also divided into many districts (each district covering a city or several townships).
