Overview:
The Republic of Albania is a Balkan country bordering Montenegro to the north, the Republic of Macedonia in the east the Serbian province of Kosovo in the north-east, and Greece in the south. It has an Adriatic Sea coast to the west and an Ionian Sea coast to the south-west.
With a GDP per capita 1/2 that of Bulgaria and 1/10 that of the United Kingdom Albania is one of the poorest European countries. It has poor road and rail to its neighbours and internally. 50% of the economically-active population of Albania are engaged in agriculture and 20% works abroad.
Tourism:
Albania's Ionian Sea coastline, especially near the Greek island of Corfu, is becoming increasingly popular with tourists as it is relatively unspoiled nature and has beautiful beaches. Though still in its infancy the tourism industry is growing rapidly.
History:
Albania was invaded by Italy on 7 April 1939, whih met little resistance and took control of the country. During World War II Albanian communists and nationalists fought a partisan war against the Italian and German invasions. The socialists (usually called communists) took over after World War II. In November 1944 the communists gained control of the government under the leader of the resistance, Enver Hoxha. The Communist Party was created in November 1941.
Recently, Albania's bid for Eurpoean Union membership, together with the rest of the Western Balkans, has been set as a priority by the European Commission. In 2006 Albania signed a Stabilization & Association Agreement with the EU, thus completing the first major step towards joining. It is expected that Albania, along with Croatia and Macedonia, will receive a NATO membership invitation by 2008.
