Overview: Aruba is one of the Leeward Antilles (the southern chain of the Lesser Antilles islands) and is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. 33 km long, and with a total area of 75 m2, the island of Aruba lies outside the Caribbean hurricane belt, 27km north of Venezuela. Aruba was occupied by the United Kingdom beween 1799 and 1802 and also between 1805 and 1816. Colonised by Spain for more than 100 years, Aruba is now under Dutch administration, and has been since 1636. Aruba has low levels of unemployment and enjoys amongst the highest standards of living of all the Caribbean islands.
The economy of Aruba is derived mainly from tourism (3/4 of Aruba's GNP), aloe export, pretroleum refining, gold and phosphate mining. The majority of the tourists come from the United States of America and Venezuela. The United States are Aruba's largest trading partner. The island takes its' 21 member parliament from the Kingdom of the Netherlands and, in 1986, after many years, it was successful in its' 1947 petition to become an autonomous state within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Tourism has flourished due in large part to the gorgeous white, sandy beaches, on the west and south coasts, which are sheltered from the strong sea currents. The islands of Bonaire and Curacao lie to the east of Aruba. These islands are part of the Netherland Antilles and, along with Aruba, are often referred to as ABC (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao). There are two official languages on the island; Dutch and Papiamento (a long evolving language being a mixture of Dutch, English, African, Spanish and Portugese.
