Overview: Barbados is an independant West Indian nation situated in the Atlantic Ocean, east of the Caribbean Sea. The closest islands to Barbados are Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia. Although no longer under British rule, gaining independance in 1966 after 300 uninterrupted years, Barbados still keeps Queen Elizabeth II as its' head of state. A total land area of 166 sq miles houses the island's 282,000 population. In the Mesozoic period, when Sth America broke from Africa, a vast reef was formed. Later, in the Cenozoic period, the reef was pushed up and broke the surface in one single location to form the island of Barbados.
Location: Caribbean, island in the North Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Venezuela
The industries of Barbados thrived with the use of slaves until a major rebellion in 1816 when more than 20,000s slaves forced their white 'owners' from the plantations. The uprising was later referred to as Bussa's Rebellion after a slave ranger called Bussa. The rebellion failed and many died in the fighting. 144 of those rounded up were subsequently executed. Others were transported off the island.
Barbados is now part of the United Nations and also retains links with its' previous colonial rulers with its' membership of the Commonwealth of Nations. In 2006 a judicial review settled an ongoing fishing rights dispute between Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago.
Industry: Although Sugar Cane production has historically been the cornerstone of Barbados' industry this has changed of late to more reliance on tourism and manufacturing. New hotels and developments are springing up all over the island and offshore financial services are proving to be financially very lucrative.
Climate: tropical; rainy season (June to October) although there are constant trade winds from the Atlantic which keep the temp mild. It is spared the worst of the hurricanse due to its' far eastern Atlantic location. Statistics show that a hurricane strikes Barbados only once every 26 years.
Terrain: relatively flat; rises gently to central highland region. Mainly limestone/coral composition. Tropical woodland, mangrove and sloping pastures in some areas. Much of Barbados is surrounded by coral reefs
