Overview: Formerly called British Honduras, the country of Belize is located in Central America and is bordered by Guatemala, Mexico and the Caribbean Sea where the world's second largest barrier reef follows much of the coastline. It remains the only central American country to have English as its' official language. Spanish and Kriol, however, are also spoken widely throughout the country. It enjoys one of the lowest population density in the world with just 320,000 inhabitants in its' area of less than 9,000 sq miles. This may change in time as it has one of the highest populations growths in the western hemisphere. A member of the Commonwealth of Nations Belize is proud of its' British colonial heritage. The slave trade and sugar production feature heavily in Belize's history.

History: Spain repeatedly tried to win sovereignty of Belize but were always unsuccessful. Britain did not officially recognise Belize until 1786 to avoid the risk of provoking an attack by Spain. Although slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire in 1838 very little improvment in working conditions filtered down to the settlement of Belize. It was only in 1862 that Great Britain announced Belize as a British Crown Colony and gave it the name British Honduras. In 1930s the Great Depression almost destroyed the economy of Belize when the demand for timber by the British collapsed. A severe hurricane in 1931 caused widespread damage and the resulting affest on the economy caused an uprising and calls for independance. In 1964 the then British Honduras was allowed self-government and in 1973 was re-named Belize. Full independance was achieved in 1981.
