Overview:
Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia (Malaya) and better know as 'KL'. It sits on the western coast of the Malaysian Peninsular about 150 km north of the old capital Malacca. Towering office blocks dominate the skyline of the city, with vast markets and shopping centres surrounding it. A multi-ethnic society made up mainly of Malays, Chinese and Indians. Population 1.3 million.

History:
Kuala Lumpur was created in the middle of the 19th century when tin prospectors settled at the convergence of the Klang and Gombak river.

Climate:
Kuala Lumpur is virtually on the equator and very hot and humid. Malaysia's tropical conditions bring sudden heavy downpours of rain much of which evaporates very quickly.

Sights to visit:

The Petronas Towers - a visit to Kuala Lumpur is not complete without a trip up the Petronas Towers.

Petaling Street - the center of Kuala Lumpur's original Chinatown - traditional atmosphere, particularly at night when you can buy almost anything and eat a range of asian cuisines.

Central Market - once a wet market, now the art-deco design of Kuala Lumpur's Central Market hosts the display and development of Malaysian arts and crafts. There are many performances, demonstrations, and activities to enjoy. 

Kuala Lumpur Railway Station - a fascinating piece of architecture now housing many interesting stalls, kiosks, shops and restaurants.

Sepang International Circuit - home to the Malaysian Formular One Grand Prix - a magnificent architecturally designed structure.

Getting around Kuala Lumpur

  1. On foot - walking about the city is pretty flat but humidity is high so drink lots of water.
  2. By taxi - there are plenty of mini-buses and air conditioned taxis plying their trade.
  3. By Bus or Hire Car - Kuala Lumpur's road are excellent and there are many bus and car hire facilities.

    Kuala Lumpur is 150 km north of Malacca on the western coast of the Malay Peninsular.

By air - Kuala Lumpur has it's own international airports receiving flights from all over the world, Subang Kuala Lumpur and KL International Airport at Sepang.

By train or road - Kuala Lumpur has excellent road and rail services.

By Sea - Kuala Lumpur is served by Malaysia's largest sea port, Port Klang.
