Overview:
Penang (Pulau Pinang) State is made up of Seberang Perai (also known as Province Wellesley) a hinterland on the western coast of the Malay mainland bordered by Kedah to the north and east, and Perak to the south, the Island of Penang (Pulau Pinang) and a few small islands which were once leper and penal colonies. The state capital is George Town. Originally part of the Malay sultanate of Kedah, Penang was given to the British East India Company in 1786 by the Sultan of Kedah

History:
Penang (Pulau Pinang) is one of the oldest and most established urban areas of Maylaysia retaining much of it's early traditions and way of life. Old Penang still has a slow pace of life with rickshaws and bullock carts. The area is much influenced by the large and long-standing Chinese population.

Climate:
Penang (Pulau Pinang) enjoys all year round equatorial climate with plentiful rainfall, especially during the monsoon season between April and September.


Sights to visit:

Batu Muang Fishing Village - This village is special for its shrine to the early Chinese sea adventurer Admiral Cheng Ho.

Penang Hill - trek through the jungle along up to 20 nature trails. Or, you go to Ayer Hitam and take the Keretapi Bukit Bendera funicular railway to the top.

Fort Cornwallis - built on the site where Capt. Francis Light, founder of Penang, first landed in 1786. Rebuilt in 1810  in an attempt to make up for initial strategic planning errors. In the shape of a star, little remains of the original building except the outer walls, a gunpowder magazine, and a small Christian chapel.

Botanical Gardens - 30 hectares (70 acres) of landscaped grounds, established by the British in 1884, with grounds that are perfect for walks and monkeys.
